Spectacular Savanna

Piece a spectacular sampler quilt featuring iconic savanna animals including an elephant, lion, rhino, gazelle, wildebeest, hippo, giraffe, and zebra. All blocks are sewn using conventional patchwork techniques.

QUILT SIZES

LARGE QUILT

The 64" x 84" Large Quilt is made with Elephant, Lion, Rhino, Gazelle, Giraffe, Hippo, Zebra, and Wildebeest blocks with a top and bottom Leaf block borders.

SMALL QUILT

The 47" x 54" Small Quilt is made with Elephant, Lion, Hippo, Rhino, Zebra, and Giraffe blocks.

BABY QUILTS

30" x 30" Baby Quilts made with Elephant or Gazelle blocks.

24" x 24" PILLOWS

24" x 24" Pillows made with Lion, Wildebeest, or Leaf blocks.

20" x 20" Pillows made with Hippo, Giraffe, Zebra, or Rhino blocks.

ABOUT THE PATTERN

This is a patchwork pattern. All fabric is rotary cut and sewn together using conventional patchwork piecing.

This pattern also includes diagrams and charts showing all of the pieces needed to make each block. You can use these as a reference while making the pattern projects, or as a guide for making individual blocks and scrappy projects.

The Rhino's horn is made using the full-size cutting guide on Page 46 of the pattern. The piecing instructions for the Rhino horn include using the cutting guide to cut the horn to size, sewing slightly-too-large pieces of background fabric to the horn, and then trimming the pieced unit to the correct size. This method makes it easier to piece the pointy Horn Unit without having to match multiple points.

ABOUT THE FABRIC

Spectacular Savanna blocks are made with fat quarters (18" x 21") and fat eighths (9" x 21"). Different amounts of each fabric will be used and, in some cases, you will have leftover fabric. Refer to the individual block instructions to see exactly how much of each fabric you will need.

My sample quilts were made using Robert Kaufman basics, including Kona Solids and Essex Linen Blends. Pages 3 - 4 of the pattern include a fabric chart showing the fabrics I used. That fabric guide can also be downloaded via the link below.

Kona Sea Mist, Metal, and Palm make great background fabrics for any size Spectacular Savanna quilt.

ABOUT THE QUILTING

My samples were quilted by Emily Hoppe of So Sunny Quilts. The Large Quilt (Sea Mist background) was quilted using Wishbone by Jess Zeigler. The Small Quilt (Palm background) was quilted using Tikki Curved Soft by Karlee Porter.

ORIGINAL EDITION

Spectacular Savanna was originally published in 2019 and featured a sample made with my Adventure collection for Robert Kaufman, which is now out of print. The original pattern did not include the Small Quilt option.
