AWESOME OCEAN

This fat quarter-friendly sampler quilt features a reef full of underwater friends, including: Salty Seahorse, Angelica, Tony the Turtle, Chuckles, Puffy, Mr. Manatee, Kelp, and Preppy the Whale. Make a Large Sampler Quilt with 8 of each block or a Small Sampler Quilt with 2 of each block. Everything is sewn using conventional patchwork techniques. No templates or paper piecing!

The patterns includes a detailed color chart that you can use to duplicate the fabrics I’ve used in my samples, or as a guide for organizing your own fabric selections.

PRINT PATTERNS, FABRIC, AND KITS

The Awesome Ocean quilts pictured on this page were made with Robert Kaufman’s Kona Cotton Solids. A detailed color chart is included in my newly updated Awesome Ocean pattern, which is shipping to my wholesale distributors now.

The background fabric on both of my samples is Robert Kaufman’s Essex Yarn-Dyed Linen Blend in Nautical.

As part of its January 2021 release, Robert Kaufman is selling a kit to make the Large Awesome Ocean Quilt. It includes the pattern and all of the same fabrics I used to make the quilt top and binding in my sample. Shops can order the kits from Robert Kaufman now, for shipping later this Spring (which is when you will start to see them in shops.)

SECOND EDITION

My original Awesome Ocean pattern was published in 2017, alongside with my Reef fabric collection for Robert Kaufman, and showed pictures of quilts made with Reef. That version of the pattern is now out of print, though you will probably continue to see it in shops for a little while.

In January 2021, I released a second edition of Awesome Ocean, which streamlines the fabric requirements to use only fat quarters, rather than a larger number of fat quarters and fat eighths. If you already own the first edition of the pattern and would like a guide for using that pattern to make the Kona Solids versions of Awesome Ocean pictured on this page, you can request one by emailing info@ohfransson.com.

CORRECTIONS TO SECOND EDITION

There are three corrections to the first printing of the second edition, as follows:

  1. The chart on Page 6 (Kelp Block) lists the sizes of pieces B and C incorrectly. Piece B should be 1-½” x 3-½”, and Piece C should be 1-½” x 15-½”. The piece sizes are referenced correctly in the cutting and piecing directions below the chart.

  2. On Page 15 (Tony the Turtle) the cutting diagram in the lower-left corner is labeled “Colorful Fabric 2” but should be labeled “Colorful Fabric 3.” All colors are referenced correctly in the piece size chart, the rest of the cutting directions, and on Page 3.

  3. The directions and chart on Pages 17 and 18 (Mr. Manatee) show 2 pieces R per block. You will actually need 4 pieces R for each block (8 total pieces R for a Small Quilt, or 32 total pieces R for a Large Quilt). There should be ample remaining background fabric to cut these extra pieces.

I apologize for this confusion!
