ABOUT THE PATTERN

I don’t know if it’s the serene-looking birds, the happy flowers, or the fact that the mirror-image blocks work together to make sun shapes at the block intersections, but I found the process of making this quilt to be incredibly soothing. I hope you will too!

The 64” x 69” Large Quilt is made using 24 fat quarters. You’ll need white (or whatever color you decide to use!) fabric for the birds and a dark solid for their eyes, but everything else, including the background, is made from fat quarters.

With only two blocks, the 36” x 42” Small Quilt comes together even more quickly and features a unique layout with a different background fabric on each half of the quilt top.

Sunshine quilts are made using conventional patchwork. No templates or paper piecing!

FABRIC & KITS

This Fall, I’ve created four new color palettes featuring prints from my Paintbox print basics collection (including lots of fun new colors!). I made my Sunshine quilt sample using the Abstract palette, which includes 12 prints from my Paintbox print basics collection, and the 12-piece Abstract Solid Coordinates. Fat quarter bundles of these fabrics are currently available for wholesale preorder from Robert Kaufman Fabrics for shipping in July 2023. Robert Kaufman is also selling a kit for the Large Quilt, which includes all of the fabrics you will need to make the large quilt top, binding fabric, and the pattern. The kit is also available for wholesale preorder for shipping in July 2023.

Want to make a Sunshine quilt using different fabric? It’s super-easy! My pattern includes a fabric chart that you can use to organize your fabrics, while still using the coding system I’ve created to keep everything organized.

QUILTING NOTE

My sample was quilted by Emily Hoppe of So Sunny Quilts using Julie Hirt’s 60s Mod Butterfly design.
