ABOUT THE PATTERN

This is a patchwork pattern. All fabric is rotary cut and sewn together using conventional patchwork piecing.

This pattern also includes diagrams and charts showing all of the pieces needed to make each block. You can use these as a reference while making the pattern projects, or as a guide for making individual blocks and scrappy projects.

Swan Island blocks include some small pieces. The pattern will walk you through the process of sewing them with both diagrams and written instructions for each step.

Among my patterns, Swan Island is rated Skill Level 3 (of 5). You can read more about skill levels here.

ABOUT THE FABRIC

Swan bodies are made from yardage of the same white fabric, such as Robert Kaufman's Kona Snow or Essex Linen (Linen is the name of the color). Each of the quilts also includes a contrasting swan block made with a darker fabric, such as Essex Yarn-Dyed Espresso.

Swan blocks also include an Eye Fabric, such as Kona Espresso, and a Beak Fabric, such as Kona Roasted Pecan.

The contrasting feather detail on each block is made with one fat eighth (9" x 21"). Feather details can be prints or solids, and can contrast with the swan body fabric a little or a lot, depending on your preference. In my samples, I used my Kitchen Window Wovens ginghams to make the Feather Details.

ABOUT THE QUILTING

My samples were free-motion quilted by me, on my Janome 1600p, using a pattern of meandering ripples. For longarm quilting, any similar edge-to-edge design should look great!
