Star Systems
QUILT & PIECED BACK
This pattern includes instructions for making an 80" x 80" quilt featuring nine 24" x 24" star "systems" blocks.
Star Systems includes instructions for using scraps from the quilt top to make a pieced quilt back. Making the pieced back will use fabric that might otherwise be discarded, while are reducing the amount of backing fabric yardage you will need.
ABOUT THE PATTERN
This is a patchwork-pieced pattern. The blocks are made entirely of rotary-cut squares and rectangles, and everything is sewn together using conventional patchwork techniques. No templates or paper piecing!
The pattern includes a diagram and chart showing all of the pieces needed to make each block. You can use this as a reference while making the pattern projects, or as a guide for making individual blocks and scrappy projects.

ABOUT THE FABRIC
This is a great project for using what you have! The star blocks can be made with fat eighths (9" x 21" each), 10" x 10" squares, or groups of scraps. Don't hesitate to fussy cut your favorite prints for the centers of the stars.
I made my sample using prints from my Fall 2021 Planetarium and Paintbox collections for Robert Kaufman and Kona Solid coordinates. Pages 3 and 4 include a fabric chart showing exactly which fabrics I used and where. If you're using different fabrics, you can paste swatches onto the chart to help keep track of where each fabric goes.
ABOUT THE QUILTING
My sample was free-motion quilted by me, on my Janome 1600p, using a pattern of meandering points. For longarm quilting, any similarly-dense edge-to-edge design should look great!
