Social Sharks

Make these friendly patchwork sharks using fat quarters and conventional piecing techniques.

SMALL QUILT & PILLOW

The images in the gallery below show the 59" x 62" Small Quilt, featuring 12 blocks, and the 20" x 20" quilted pillow cover, featuring one block.

LARGE QUILT

The pattern also includes instructions for a 76" x 76" Large Quilt, featuring 20 blocks.

ABOUT THE PATTERN

This is a patchwork-pieced pattern. The blocks are made entirely of rotary-cut squares and rectangles, and everything is sewn together using conventional patchwork techniques. No templates or paper piecing!

The pattern includes a diagram and chart showing all of the pieces needed to make each block. You can use this as a reference while making the pattern projects, or as a guide for making individual blocks and scrappy projects.

Among my patterns, Social Sharks is rated Skill Level 4 (of 5). You can read more about skill levels here.

ABOUT THE FABRIC

You will need a 12" x 16" piece of fabric for each shark block. A piece this size can be cut from a standard 18" x 21" fat quarter.

The sharks in my Small quilt and Pillow are made with my Kitchen Window Wovens for Robert Kaufman.

Make the Large Quilt shown on the pattern back using one yard each Kona Fog, Pool, Ice Frappe, and Cadet. From each fabric, cut 2 strips, 16" x WOF, and subcut 5 pieces 12" x 16" to make 5 shark blocks.

ABOUT THE QUILTING

My samples were free-motion quilted by me, on my Janome 1600p, using a pattern of meandering points. For longarm quilting, any similarly-dense edge-to-edge design should look great!
