ABOUT THE PATTERN

This is a patchwork pattern. All fabric is rotary cut and sewn together using conventional patchwork piecing.

This pattern also includes diagrams and charts showing all of the pieces needed to make each block. You can use these as a reference while making the pattern projects, or as a guide for making individual blocks and scrappy projects.

Sea Urchins blocks are made by cutting eight patchwork-pieced units with a 45° triangle template and then sewing the triangles together to make a medallion shape. The pattern includes a full-size template pattern that you can trace onto template plastic. Alternately, you can use an 8-1/2" wedge-style 45° triangle ruler, such as Creative Grids® Kaleidoscope or Dresden Plate Triangle (CGRTKAL45).

Among my patterns, Sea Urchins is rated Skill Level 3 (of 5). You can read more about skill levels here.

ABOUT THE FABRIC

My sample was made using my now-out-of-print Reef print fabric collection for Robert Kaufman fabrics.

Sea Urchins quilts are perfect for showing off the fabric collection of your choice, or an assortment of scraps. This pattern was designed for using precut 10" x 10" squares or scraps. You can use all solids, all prints, or a combination of the two. This is a great project for colorblocking monochromatic fabrics, making rainbow-colored blocks, and/or fussy cutting your favorite prints.

ABOUT THE QUILTING

My samples were free-motion quilted by me, on my Janome 1600p, using a pattern of meandering points. For longarm quilting, any similar edge-to-edge design should look great!
