Norm & Nanette

Gnome siblings, Norm and Nanette, can be pieced using conventional patchwork techniques. No paper piecing! This pattern is precut and scrap friendly, using 10" x 10" squares and fat eighths to make Norm and Nanette's hats, clothes, and boots.

QUILT SIZES

Norm & Nanette quilts are made with 10" x 22-1/2" Norm blocks and 8" x 22-1/2" Nanette blocks.

SMALL QUILT

The 30" x 36" Small Quilt is made with one of each block.

LARGE QUILT

The 68" x 76" Large Quilt is made with nine of each block.

ABOUT THE PATTERN

This is a patchwork pattern. All fabric is rotary cut and sewn together using conventional patchwork piecing.

This pattern also includes diagrams and charts showing all of the pieces needed to make each block. You can use these as a reference while making the pattern projects, or as a guide for making individual blocks and scrappy projects.

Norm and Nanette's hats are made using the full-size cutting guide on Page 22 of the pattern. The piecing instructions include using the cutting guide to cut the hats to size, sewing slightly-too-large pieces of background fabric to the sides, and then trimming the pieced unit to the correct size. This method makes it easier to piece the pointy Hat Units without having to match multiple points.

Among my patterns, Norm & Nanette is rated Skill Level 4 (of 5). You can read more about skill levels here.

ABOUT THE FABRIC

The pattern includes a fabric guide featuring my now-out-of-print Berry Season collection for Robert Kaufman. A newer fabric guide, featuring my Paintbox fabrics, can be downloaded below.

FACE, HAIR, AND BEARD FABRICS

The pattern includes two options for making the gnome faces, beards, and hair.

  • Option 1: You can use the same three fabrics (such as Kona Snow for Norm's beard, Kona Cedar for Nanette's hair, and Kona Lingerie for all of the faces).
  • Option 2: You can make each face and beard or hair from different fabrics. Page 1 of the pattern includes a fabric guide with Kona Solids recommendations for "realistic" hair and face colors.

The gallery below shows examples of both of these fabric options.

CLOTHING FABRICS

Most of the gnome's clothing is made from 10" x 10" squares. Norm's tunic requires a little more fabric, and can be made from a fat eighth (9" x 21") or two identical 10" x 10" squares.

These fabric requirements reflect the closest standard precut sizes, but this is also a great project for using scraps. Refer to the individual block instructions to see exactly what pieces need to be cut from each fabric.

ABOUT THE QUILTING

All of my sample quilts were free-motion quilted. The original cover quilt was quilted by Gina Pina using a Scandinavian-inspired leaf pattern. The other quilts were quilted by me, on my Janome 1600p, using a woodgrain design.
