ABOUT THE PATTERN

This is a patchwork-pieced pattern. The blocks are made entirely of rotary-cut squares and rectangles, and everything is sewn together using conventional patchwork techniques. No templates or paper piecing!

This pattern includes a large number of pieces, many of which are small, but the same basic patchwork piecing techniques are used throughout. The pattern includes detailed cutting directions, including charts that show all of the pieces included in each block. The instructions for making each block include both written directions and full-color diagrams for each step.

Among my patterns, Mermaids is rated Skill Level 3 (of 5). You can read more about skill levels here.

ABOUT THE FABRICS

In my cover sample, the solid fabrics (background and mermaid face, hair, and detail fabrics) are Moda's Bella Solids. The Tail Fabrics are Rashida Coleman's Speckled collection for Ruby Star Society. The pattern includes a detailed fabric chart listing the fabrics I used.

The Fish Fabric used in my sample is Bella Green Olive, which has been discontinued. Bella Pesto is a good substitute.

My second sample was made using the following Robert Kaufman fabrics. The Tail and Fish Fabrics are assorted prints from my Paintbox print collection. The rest of the quilt was made with the following Kona Solids:

  • Background = Sage
  • Face and Hair Fabrics = Lingerie/Ochre, Tan/Cedar, Latte/Roasted Pecan, Biscuit, Coffee, and Earth/Chestnut
  • Mouth Fabric = Punch
  • Eye Fabric = Espresso

ABOUT THE QUILTING

Both of my samples were quilted by Emily Hoppe of So Sunny Quilts. The cover sample features Hills and Valleys by Julie Hirt, stitched upside-down. My other sample features Typewriter Ribbon by Julie Hirt.
