Piece a patchwork forest using your favorite fat quarters. A deer, bear, and rabbit hide among the trees!

QUILT SIZES

Lookout includes instructions for quilts in three sizes, each featuring a single bear, rabbit, and deer block among a forest of tree blocks. All of the blocks finish at 8" x 15".

BABY QUILT

The Baby Quilt measures 40" x 45".

LAP QUILT

The gallery images below show the 56" x 60" Lap Quilt.

PICNIC QUILT

The Picnic Quilt measures 72" x 75".

ABOUT THE PATTERN

This is a patchwork-pieced pattern. The blocks are made entirely of rotary-cut squares and rectangles, and everything is sewn together using conventional patchwork techniques. No templates or paper piecing!

The pattern includes diagrams and charts showing the pieces needed to make each block. You can use this as a reference while making the pattern projects, or as a guide for making individual blocks and scrappy projects.

The three animal blocks includes some small pieces. The pattern will walk you through the process of sewing them, with both diagrams and written instructions for each step. The tree blocks are made of comparatively larger pieces that are simpler and faster to put together.

Lookout quilt tops are made by sewing the blocks together in a grid with no additional sashing or borders.

ABOUT THE FABRIC

My samples were made with a variety of Robert Kaufman's Kona Solids and Essex Linen Blends in blues, greens, and warm browns.

The pattern includes fabric guides for each quilt size. The guides show which fabrics were used for each block, and where in the quilts each block should go.

Lookout quilts will be most successful when made with solid fabrics and/or small, monochromatic and nondirectional prints.

ABOUT THE QUILTING

My sample was quilted by Emily Hoppe of So Sunny Quilts using Flight by Jess Zeigler.

ORIGINAL EDITION

The original 2022 release featured a sample made with my Paintbox prints and Paintbox Solid Coordinates. The print fabrics and precuts described in the original pattern are no longer widely available. (This sample quilt was quilted by Emily Hoppe of So Sunny Quilts using Timber by Melonie J. Caldwell.)

The only substantive differences between the 2022 and 2024 versions of the pattern are the fabric charts and sample images.
