Lisa the Unicorn

Use precut 2-1/2" fabric strips to make these magical unicorns.

QUILT & PILLOW SIZES

Lisa the Unicorn quilts are made with 26" x 26" blocks.

PILLOW

The 26" x 26" Pillow is made with one block.

SMALL QUILT

The 62" x 62" Small Quilt is made with four blocks.

LARGE QUILT

The 90" x 90" Large Quilt is made with nine blocks. (This sample was made using my now-out-of-print Terrarium fabric collection.)

ABOUT THE PATTERN

This is a patchwork pattern. All fabric is rotary cut and sewn together using conventional patchwork piecing.

This pattern also includes diagrams and charts showing all of the pieces needed to make each block. You can use these as a reference while making the pattern projects, or as a guide for making individual blocks and scrappy projects.

Lisa's horn is made using the full-size cutting guide enclosed in (or, in the case of the pdf pattern, at the end of) the pattern. The piecing instructions include using the cutting guide to cut the horn to size, sewing slightly-too-large pieces of background fabric to the sides, and then trimming the pieced unit to the correct size. This method makes it easier to piece the pointy Horn Unit without having to match multiple points.

Among my patterns, Lisa the Unicorn is rated Skill Level 3 (of 5). You can read more about skill levels here.

ABOUT THE FABRIC

MANE FABRICS

The pattern calls for 2-1/2" x WOF strips, such as Moda Jelly Rolls or Robert Kaufman Roll-Ups because this is the precut fabric size closest to the 1-3/4" width of most of the mane pieces. The pattern will direct you to use 6 coordinating strips to make the mane, horn, and nostril for each block.

The diagram and chart on Pages 7 - 8 lists all of the pieces you will need to make each block, so you can easily cut the mane pieces from scraps instead.

RAINBOW MANE VARIATION

Page 9 of the pattern lists the piece sizes you will need to make rainbow manes for your unicorn blocks. I made the manes in this quilt using Kona Pomegranate, Watermelon, Orangeade, Goldfish, Sunny, Citrus, Acid Lime, Key Lime, Parakeet, Ferndale, Cypress, Bluegrass, Pool, and Cyan.

The Block Backgrounds are Essex Yarn-Dyed Shale, and the Sashing and Borders are Kona Metal. I used Essex Yarn-Dyed Metallic Platinum to make the Horns.

ABOUT THE QUILTING

My samples were free-motion quilted by me, on my Janome 1600p.
