Lepidoptera

Like the biological order for which it's named, this quilt includes a variety of butterflies and moths. Alize, Beatrix, Carmen, Della, Eugenia, and Fern combine to make a beautiful sampler quilt.

QUILT SIZES

SMALL QUILT

The 36” x 41” Small Quilt includes one large Alice block.

LARGE QUILT

The 84" x 84" Large Quilt includes one Alice Block, four Beatrix blocks, four Carmen blocks, four Della blocks, four Eugenia blocks, and two Fern blocks.

ABOUT THE PATTERN

This is a patchwork-pieced pattern. The blocks are made entirely of rotary-cut squares and rectangles, and everything is sewn together using conventional patchwork techniques. No templates or paper piecing!

This pattern includes a large number of pieces, many of which are small, but the same basic patchwork piecing techniques are used throughout. The pattern includes detailed cutting directions, including charts that show all of the pieces included in each block. The instructions for making each block include both written directions and full-color diagrams for each step.

Among my patterns, Lepidoptera is rated Skill Level 5 (of 5). You can read more about skill levels here.

ABOUT THE FABRIC

I made my sample quilt with Robert Kaufman fabrics, including 30 Kona Solids for the butterflies and a background of Essex Yarn-Dyed Lingerie.

The 30 Kona Solids used are:

  • Group A: Med. Pink, Bubble Gum, Azalea, Honeysuckle, Pomegranate, Sangria
  • Group B: Shell, Ice Peach, Cantaloupe, Orangeade, Tangerine*, Flame*
  • Group C: Meringue, Lemon, Bright Idea, Banana Pepper, Wasabi, Pickle
  • Group D: Sea Mist, Ice Frappe, Aruba, Cypress, Bluegrass, Ultra Marine
  • Group E: Bone, Oyster, Doeskin, Zinc, Otter, Charcoal

You will need one fat quarter (18" x 21") of all fabrics except the ones noted with an asterisk (*Tangerine and Flame) of which you will need 3/8 yard.

ABOUT THE QUILTING

My sample quilt was free-motion quilted by me, on my Janome 1600p, using a pattern of meandering squares. For longarm quilting, any similarly-dense edge-to-edge design should look great!

ORIGINAL EDITION

Lepidoptera was originally released in Spring 2016, featuring a sample quilt made with my Paintbox 2016 print fabric collection for Robert Kaufman, which is no longer available.

If you have the original pattern and want to make a quilt like the one in the updated pattern, you can download the fabric guide below.
