Florence Flamingo

Use precut fabric strips to make a flock of colorful flamingos!

As of May 2026, the 5½" x 8½" booklet version of this pattern has been discontinued and replaced with a new 8½" x 11" booklet featuring larger pages, a fabric guide for using Popcorn fabrics, and an option for making the Large Quilt using standard quarter yard cuts of Bella Solids.

Fabric guides for the newer quilt options are included in the updated pattern and will be posted on this page soon. In the meantime, you can refer to the pattern back image below for lists of the included fabrics.

QUILT SIZES

Florence Flamingo quilts are made with 17" x 25" blocks.

SMALL QUILT

The 45" x 45" Small Quilt is made with two blocks.

LARGE QUILT

The 59" x 79" Large Quilt is made with nine blocks.

ABOUT THE PATTERN

This is a patchwork pattern. All fabric is rotary cut and sewn together using conventional patchwork piecing.

This pattern also includes diagrams and charts showing all of the pieces needed to make each block. You can use these as a reference while making the pattern projects, or as a guide for making individual blocks and scrappy projects.

Florence's bent leg is made using the full-size cutting guide on Page 1. The cutting guide will help you to make a cut so that everything can be sewn at the correct angle.

Among my patterns, Florence Flamingo is rated Skill Level 4 (of 5). You can read more about skill levels here.

ABOUT THE FABRIC

Florence Flamingo quilts can be made with precut rolls of 2-½" x WOF strips, such as Moda Jelly Rolls, or standard quarter yard cuts of fabric. Please refer to the pattern back for more details.

    OPTIONAL PIECED BACK

New versions of the pattern describe how leftover precut strips can be used to make a pieced back for the Large Quilt.

If you have an older pattern that doesn't include this information, you can make the pieced back by sewing together 44 pieces, 2-1/2” x 18-1/2” each, to make a Strip Detail. Sew one piece of background fabric, 33-1/2” x 88”, to the left, and one piece of background fabric, 16-1/2” x 88”, to the right to make the pieced quilt back.

Note: The pieces of the strip detail that are nearest the edges will end up getting cut off, so that's not the best place to put your favorites.

    ABOUT THE QUILTING

My sample was quilted by Emily Hoppe of So Sunny Quilts using Jess Zeigler's Glancing edge-to-edge design.
