Dog Park

Tippi, Cookie, Bernadette, Pickles, Lucky, Ginger, Edgar, Wadsworth, Buttercup, Jeff, and Clover are all ready to play in the dog park. My Dog Park pattern includes instructions for making 11 happy pups, using conventional patchwork techniques.

The dog blocks range in size from 11" x 13" (smallest block) to 19" x 26" (largest block) and are made with a combination of fat quarters and fat eighths. Different fabric combinations are used for each block, and some fabrics are used in more than one block.

I’ve tried to keep some of the block designs ambiguous enough to be interpreted as different types of dogs, so you can have fun mixing and matching fabrics to make blocks that look more like your own furry friends.

QUILT SIZES

Dog Park includes instructions for making four different sampler quilts.

LARGE QUILTS

The images on the front of the pattern and in the gallery below show the 68” x 72” Large Quilt and the 68” x 86” Large Quilt with Tennis Ball Borders. Both of these quilts include one each of all 11 dog blocks.

MEDIUM QUILT

The 55” x 60” Medium Quilt includes Pickles, Edgar, Tippi, Cookie, Bernadette, Lucky, and Ginger blocks (seven dog blocks).

SMALL QUILT

The 40” x 50” Small Quilt includes Clover, Wadsworth, Jeff, and Buttercup blocks (four dog blocks).

ABOUT THE PATTERN

This is a patchwork-pieced pattern. The blocks are made entirely of rotary-cut squares and rectangles, and everything is sewn together using conventional patchwork techniques. No templates or paper piecing!

Among my patterns, Dog Park is rated Skill Level 5 (of 5). You can read more about skill levels here.

ABOUT THE FABRIC

The chart on Pages 2 - 4 of the pattern shows the fabrics I used to make the Large Quilt with Tennis Ball borders shown on the cover. The dogs are made with a variety of Robert Kaufman’s Kona Solids and Essex Linen Blends. Please refer to the pattern back image for more details.

The dogs in the draped quilt shown on the cover (the one with a Seafoam background) were made entirely from Kona Solids. A fabric guide for that quilt is linked below.

Kona Astral, Seafoam, Creamsicle, and Peridot are recommended background colors for any size Dog Park quilt.

For best results, make the dog blocks using solid fabrics or small, monochromatic and non-directional prints. The dogs will look the most “realistic” when made with the same progression of values shown in the fabric chart and described on Page 2 of the pattern.

ABOUT THE QUILTING

The Large Quilt with Tennis Ball Borders on the cover was quilted by Emily Hoppe of So Sunny Quilts, using Trace by Jess Ziegler. The Large Quilt with the Seafoam background was also quilted by Emily Hoppe of So Sunny Quilts, using Julie Hirt’s Typewriter Ribbon.
