Crystal Cluster
Combine your favorite precut or scrap fabrics and conventional patchwork techniques to make a quilt or pillow featuring a single, dramatic large-scale block.
QUILT & PILLOW SIZES
The images in the gallery below show the 70" x 70" Lap Quilt and the 24" x 24" Pillow. The pattern also includes instructions for making a 46" x 46" Baby Quilt and a 92" x 92" Queen Bed Quilt. Each of the projects features the same composition in a different size.
ABOUT THE PATTERN
This is a patchwork-pieced pattern made entirely of rotary-cut squares and rectangles. Everything is sewn together using conventional patchwork techniques. No templates or paper piecing!
Among my patterns, Crystal Cluster is rated Skill Level 2 (of 5). The difficulty level of this project will vary depending on which size you're making, with smaller projects (the pillow) being the most challenging and larger projects (lap or bed quilt) being easier. Regardless of which size you're making, the pattern includes color diagrams and written instructions to walk you through each step.
You can read more about skill levels here.
ABOUT THE FABRIC
You will need 16 colorful fabrics for each project. I used Kona Blush Pink, Watermelon, Nectarine, Terracotta, Saffron, Grellow, Banana Pepper, Pickle, Peapod, Botanical, Kale, Breakers, Seascape, Slate, Lilac, and Plum.
Refer to the pattern back to see which size pieces you will need for your project. You can also make this project using 16 groups of monochromatic scraps, as described on Page 9.
My Background Fabric is a print from my Paintbox collection for Robert Kaufman Fabrics. Kona Haze is a good substitute for this fabric.
ABOUT THE QUILTING
My samples was straight-line quilted in a diagonal grid by me, on my Janome 1600p.
