ABOUT THE PATTERN

This is a patchwork-pieced pattern. The blocks are made entirely of rotary-cut squares and rectangles, and everything is sewn together using conventional patchwork techniques. No templates or paper piecing!

The pattern includes a diagram and chart showing all of the pieces needed to make each block. You can use this as a reference while making the pattern projects, or as a guide for making individual blocks and scrappy projects.

Cats in Pajamas blocks include several small pieces but, for the most part, the pieces in these blocks are chunkier than those in many of my other patterns. The pattern will walk you through the process of sewing them with both diagrams and written instructions for each step.

Among my patterns, Cats in Pajamas is rated Skill Level 2 (of 5). You can read more about skill levels here.

ABOUT THE FABRIC

The pattern back lists the Robert Kaufman fabrics I used to make my cats. Each cat fabric fat quarter will be used to make 3 cat blocks.

Each cat wears pajamas made from a single fat quarter (actual pajama fabric used is 14" x 18"). Each pajama fabric will be used to make the pajamas for one block and the contrasting pajama trim on another block. I made the pajamas in my samples using my Kitchen Window Wovens plaids and ginghams. The pajamas are also a great place to use your favorite novelty print fabrics.

Even if you're trying to make a block to look like a specific cat friend, I recommend using a very dark fabric like Kona Espresso to make all of the cats' eyes. This will read as more "realistic" than using lighter colors like blue or green, which can end up looking like a photonegative (like the eyes are missing pupils).

ABOUT THE QUILTING

The Large Quilt and Pillow on the cover were quilted by Emily Hoppe of So Sunny Quilts, using 60s Mod Butterfly by Julie Hirt.
