Berry Season

Use yardage, fat quarters, or precut squares and scraps to make these adorable strawberries using conventional patchwork piecing.

Berry Season includes instructions for making two different quilt sizes and a quilted pillow cover.

SMALL QUILT

The 54" x 64" Lap Quilt is made with 20 blocks.

ABOUT THE PATTERN

This is a patchwork-pieced pattern. The blocks are made entirely of rotary-cut squares and rectangles, and everything is sewn together using conventional patchwork techniques. No templates or paper piecing!

The pattern includes a diagram and chart showing all of the pieces needed to make each block. You can use this as a reference while making the pattern projects, or as a guide for making individual blocks and scrappy projects.

Berry Season blocks include some small pieces (though not as small as many of my patterns). The pattern will walk you through the process of sewing them with both diagrams and written instructions for each step. The Seed Units in each block are strip pieced to save time and help promote accuracy.

Among my patterns, Berry Season is rated Skill Level 2 (of 5). You can read more about skill levels here.

ABOUT THE FABRIC

Page 7 of the pattern includes a fabric chart with the Robert Kaufman fabrics I used to make my blocks. Combinations of coordinating solid fabrics in a variety of textures like Kona Solids, Essex Linen Blends, and Manchester Yarn-Dyed Cotton are great choices for Berry Season quilts, as as nondirectional, monochromatic prints.

The directions include instructions for making sets of blocks with fat quarters, or individual blocks with scraps and/or precut squares. Please refer to the pattern back image for materials requirements.

KONA 2023 COLOR OF THE YEAR QUILT

I made all of the berries in this Small Quilt with Robert Kaufman's 2023 Kona Color of the Year, Crush, and Kona Punch. I used Pearl Pink for the Seeds, and Pickle for the Stems. The Background is Kona Brown.

ABOUT THE QUILTING

My cover samples were free-motion quilted by me, on my Janome 1600p, using a pattern of meandering squares.

My Kona Color of the Year quilt was quilted by Emily Hoppe using Triplet by Ma Tante Quilting.
