Awesome Ocean

Awesome Ocean is a sampler quilt pattern featuring nine different underwater friends including: Salty Seahorse, Octavian (octopus), Angelica (angel fish), Tony the Turtle, Chuckles (clown fish), Puffy (puffer fish), Mr. Manatee, Kelp, and Preppy the Whale.

QUILT SIZES

LARGE QUILT

The 71" x 83" Large Quilt is made with eight of each block.

SMALL QUILT

The 37" x 43" Small Quilt is made with two of each block.

ABOUT THE PATTERN

This is a patchwork pattern. All fabric is rotary cut and sewn together using conventional patchwork piecing.

This pattern also includes diagrams and charts showing all of the pieces needed to make each block. You can use these as a reference while making the pattern projects, or as a guide for making individual blocks and scrappy projects.

ABOUT THE FABRIC

Each set of Awesome Ocean blocks (one of each block) is made with groups of 5 coordinating fat quarters (18" x 21" each). Each group should include a range of value, from lightest (Fabric 1) to darkest (Fabric 5).

You will need 8 groups (40 total fat quarters) for the Large Quilt, or 2 groups (10 total fat quarters) for the Small Quilt.

Page 3 of the pattern includes a chart showing the Kona Solids I used in my sample quilts, which are:

Group A: Baby Blue, Dusty Blue, Fog, Waterfall, Seascape
Group B: Aruba, Aloha, Pool, Breakers, Jade Green
Group C: Pond, Aloe, Cypress, Bluegrass, Emerald
Group D: Summer Pear, Cactus, Limelight, Peapod, Peridot

ABOUT THE QUILTING

My samples were free-motion quilted by me, on my Janome 1600p, using a pattern of meandering squares. For longarm quilting, any similar edge-to-edge design should look great!

ORIGINAL EDITION

Awesome Ocean was originally published in 2017 and featured samples made with my Reef collection for Robert Kaufman, which is now out of print. The original pattern used a combination of fat quarters and fat eighths (rather than fewer total fat quarters, as the updated pattern does).
