Armadillos

Use combinations of light, medium, and dark-colored fabrics to make these adorable pieced armadillo blocks.

QUILT & PILLOW SIZES

SMALL QUILT & PILLOW

The gallery images below show the 58" x 60" Small Quilt and 16" x 26" Pillow.

LARGE QUILT

The pattern also includes instructions for a 68" x 82" Large Quilt.

Note: 16" x 26" pillow inserts are not always available at craft stores, but can usually be found at home stores like IKEA and Pottery Barn.

ABOUT THE PATTERN

This is a patchwork-pieced pattern. The blocks are made entirely of rotary-cut squares and rectangles, and everything is sewn together using conventional patchwork techniques. No templates or paper piecing!

The pattern includes a diagram and chart showing all of the pieces needed to make each block. You can use this as a reference while making the pattern projects, or as a guide for making individual blocks and scrappy projects.

Among my patterns, Armadillos is rated Skill Level 3 (of 5). You can read more about skill levels here.

ABOUT THE FABRIC

Armadillos blocks are each made with a light, medium, and dark fabric. Sticking to this value scale, and using solid or monochromatic, nondirectional print fabrics will help make the armadillos look more "realistic".

  • Make a single block using one fat eighth each of Light and Medium Armadillos Fabrics, and one 5" x 5" square of Dark Armadillo Fabric.
  • Make sets of three blocks using one fat quarter each of Light and Medium Fabrics, and one 10" x 10" square of Dark Armadillo Fabric.

The Background Fabric in my samples is a print from my no-longer-available Sunroom collection for Robert Kaufman. Kona Natural or your favorite low-volume print would both be great substitutes.

ABOUT THE QUILTING

My sample was free-motion quilted by me, on my Janome 1600p, using a pattern of meandering squares. For longarm quilting, any similarly-dense edge-to-edge design should look great!
