ABOUT THE PATTERN

This is a patchwork-pieced pattern. The blocks are made entirely of rotary-cut squares and rectangles, and everything is sewn together using conventional patchwork techniques. No templates or paper piecing!

The pattern includes a diagram and chart showing all of the pieces needed to make each block. You can use this as a reference while making the pattern projects, or as a guide for making individual blocks and scrappy projects.

Among my patterns, Polychromatic is rated Skill Level 2 (of 5). You can read more about skill levels here.

ABOUT THE FABRIC

Polychromatic blocks are each made with four colorful fabrics, Fabrics 1 - 4. Fabric 1 is the smallest/innermost arc and Fabric 4 is the largest/outermost arc.

To make quilts like my sample:

  • For a Small Quilt, you will need three monochromatic groups of 4 fabrics, arranged in order value from Fabric 1 (lightest) to Fabric 4 (darkest). Each group requires 1 fat eighth (9" x 21" each) of Fabrics 1 and 2, and 1 fat quarter (18" x 21" each) of Fabrics 3 and 4.
  • For a Small Quilt, you will need three monochromatic groups of 4 fabrics, arranged in order value from Fabric 1 (lightest) to Fabric 4 (darkest). Each group requires 1/4 yard of Fabric 1, 3/8 yard each of Fabrics 2 and 3, and 1/2 yard of Fabric 4.

You can also make scrappy quilts using the following four pieces of fabric for each block:

  • 5-1/2" wide x 9-1/2" tall Fabric 1
  • 6-1/2" wide x 11-1/2" tall Fabric 2
  • 9" wide x 13-1/2" tall Fabric 3
  • 12" wide x 16-1/2" wide Fabric 4

To make a scrappy Small Quilt, you will need 7 sets, and to make a scrappy Large Quilt you will need 22 sets of these pieces.

ABOUT THE QUILTING

My samples were free-motion quilted by me, on my Janome 1600p, using a pattern of meandering boxes. For longarm quilting, any similarly-dense edge-to-edge design should look great!
